Deceiving FortuneThe little boy rounded the corner at full speed. The father attached to the child by a finger grasped in a sticky fist hobbled painfully behind the eccentric munchkin. The bright plastic basket dangling from the boy’s other hand dragged in the wood chips of the rose garden. Small spots of colorful synthetic promise glowed throughout the thorny bushes. The child reached his hand in, and pulled out a purple Easter egg, shaking it enthusiastically. The foil-wrapped sweet inside rattled and he giggled gleefully, smiling up at his father. “Daddah, lookah! Candee!” The man smiled encouragingly. “Find another one, buddy!” HeDeceiving Fortune
Blank Possibilities...a kite soars steadily through the vibrant blue sky, dipping, weaving, swerving among the wispy clouds. The child at the other end squints up at the dancing diamond, racing around in jagged circles in the open, grassy field... ...the young man lays his hand gently, hopefully, palm up on the girl's lap in the seat next to him. Momentarily he is relieved that his car is automatic--and, in the split second of hope, his risked heart catches in his throat.
